The Importance of a Democratic President in 2009
If ever there has been a time when a presidential election is critical it is the upcoming November, 2008 national election. It is essential that the Democrats come together and elect a strong and responsible leader who will fight for the rights of the American citizens.
Today, the Supreme Court in a 5-3 decision (Justice Breyer was recused) furthered the cause of corporate America. The split decision made it impossible for investors, the average Joe’s of the world, to sue third parties (complicit corporations) who assist a corporation in inflating their market value by committing fraud.
In the accounting fraud scandal that collapsed Charter Communications, several companies conspired with Charter to inflate its value. They schemed by backdating invoices to make Charter appear to have more assets than it did. By doing so, Charter’s stock sold at inflated prices while the company was loosing its ass.
So, by all accounts, the only ones loosing their asses are the citizen investors.
The decision was split along party lines… the Republican conservatives backing corporate American and the often times more liberal populist members supporting America and Americans. Again, I pray, may Ruth Bader Ginsberg be immortal.
That brings us to the upcoming presidential election and why we need to elect a Democrat to the office. Unless you are deaf and blind, it is easy to see that there is not one among the Republican candidates that would whole heartedly support an America for the Americans. The rule of thumb in the elephant party is to protect corporate America at all costs.
From CNN:
Senate Banking Chairman Christopher Dodd, D-Conn., who supported 1995 securities litigation reforms, was critical of Tuesday’s Supreme Court ruling. ” Instead of protecting innocent businesses, it would protect wrongdoers from the consequences of their actions,” Dodd said. “Such a misguided standard will do nothing to strengthen the competitive position of America’s businesses and capital markets.”
This is just one of the issues that looms on the Supreme Court horizon. We need a strong President with a sense of purpose that is based on the American citizen’s rights, not those of corporate America.
More importantly, during the next eight years some of the justices will be retiring from the high court. The slant is already a heavy five-four towards the conservative values that have led to the financial and economic crisis America now faces. Today those justices more or less said that it is just fine and dandy for corporations to lie, cheat and scheme in any way they so choose to make a profit and avoid lawsuits… at the cost of the average American citizen and investor.
We need a fighter in the Oval Office. We must elect a Democratic President. Again, I will reiterate that I believe we need John Edwards. He has the vision and the passion to take on corporate America. He has the experience to make wise choices when nominating the next Supreme Court justices. Our future depends on it… not only for us, but for generations to come. We cannot afford to lose another seat on the Big Bench.
