Huckabee, “The Flag”, and the Flag Pole

“The Flag”, of course, in this reference is what is fondly known among southerners as the Stars and Bars.  It does seem that Mike Huckabee is being wrapped in the Confederate red, white, and blue by a Tennessee organization known as Americans for the Preservation of American Culture.  Many of us love our flag, our New Testaments, and proving the strength of our faith by handling rattlesnakes in church.

That is not representative of the new South.  The south with “good ol’ boys” and ”the Dixie Mafia” are gone.  New wardrobes are no longer purchased at J.C. Penney’s during the annual white sale.  Instead, Atlanta has become a vibrant city.  Charlotte is fast becoming a financial hub.  Nashville is a wonderfully metropolitan area.  And, I could go on and on.

Unfortunately, in the south, just as in the north and out west, in this diverse country, we all have relatives we wish we could lock in the basement.  But, it’s a part of life, a very small part.

Now, about the Confederate flag… I don’t own one.  I wouldn’t fly one.  But, I will say that the Confederate flag is a part of the history of the South, as sad as it may be.  Because we don’t want to look at it flying over our capitols, does not mean we should remove it from our history books.  There is too much revisionist history being written already.

Unfortunately, those who still wish to fly the Confederate flag are often comingled with those who are the ardent evangelicals, running around the south trying to save the rest of us.

My piece said, I find Mike Huckabee’s statement concerning the Arkansas flag a little blatent coming from the mouth of a preacher.  I’m sure he thought it was cute and I’m sure he got a laugh or two from the faithful.  But, in the face of intolerance, responding that one could also find a new location for the flag pole just didn’t sound like a unifying Christian point of view.

As my dear old mother would have said, “Honey, hush… and pass the deviled eggs.”
