What Do You Get for Your Vote?

Speaking of the Democratic primary, the controversy between the Clintons and Obama, the woman, the black man, and oh, let us not forget the boring white man… and, Dennis… where is Dennis?

I have been thinking about all the possible firsts the Democratic nomination can bring.  Perhaps, we could have the party’s first woman nominee, or the party’s first black nominee, or perhaps… and it’s a real long shot, the first nominee who openly states that he has seen an UFO.  Honestly, I’m inclined to think Dennis and the UFO have more to offer than most of us have been led to believe.  But…

Regardless of what we say, the media is determined to divide the votes along gender or racial lines.  Now, let’s just suppose that all the women get together and vote Hillary into office.  (Stay with me here.)  And, when Hillary is sitting in the big Oval room, is she going to be thinking that all the women in America have voted for her and what exactly can she do for them.  What are the women of America expecting Hillary to do for us?  Is she going to spend her time concentrating on issues that are mostly relevant to women, or do we suppose she will be concerned with the economy, health care, the Iraqi War?

And, let’s suppose that Barack takes his seat behind the executive desk in the Oval Office.  Is he going to concentrate his efforts on helping just the black people, the ones who voted for him?  What exactly is it going to mean to black America to have a black president?  What exactly does the black vote think Barack is going to do for black America?  Probably, nothing more than Hillary is going to do for the feminine America.

Or, let’s get to the boring old white man.  Are all the boring old white men of America expecting that John will forget his passion for the underdog, the poor, the disadvantaged and spend Wednesday afternoons on the golf course?

I guess there is some sense of pride in electing a woman or maybe a black man or putting another boring old white man in office.  But, once the election is over and the new President has moved to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, what exactly do his/her supporters believe he/she will be able to do for them?  What do we expect in exchange for our votes?

The truth is simple.  If Hillary is elected, all of us will feel an adrenaline rush.  Same is we elect Barack.  And, in some part of the county someone will say to his/her children “See, anyone can become president.”

I say, let’s talk less about gender and race and let’s get down to the real issues.  We have three strong candidates running for an office that should be color blind and without gender specifics.

Besides, we already proved that anyone can become president when we elected George W. Bush.
