The State of the Union: In Need of a Leader
The State of the Union? We are up to our neck in Shias. That was pretty much it.
If there was one thing that stood out, and that’s a big if, Mr. Bush’s speech sounded like a laundry list of his shortcomings. The issues he presented before the Congress and the world were a compilation of everything he has addressed in past State of the Union messages.
One of the best comments I have heard was that at least he didn’t look at his watch. That’s about how boring it was. In fact, I nodded off briefly during the Iraq surge segment and apparently that was the strongest part of his speech, or at least the longest. Mr. Bush still seems to be lost in delusion, believing that the delivery of democracy to Iraq will be his leagacy. Oh, yeah! It will be. I just think we and history will look at it differently from what the Decider thinks.
Of note were Barack Obama and Ted Kennedy sitting side by side on the day after Caroline Kennedy’s op. ed. piece in the New York Times endorsed Obama and on the same day that Senator Kennedy, himself, endorsed his fellow senator for the presidency. Of equal note, Senator Hillary Clinton sitting in the Congress looking tired and pissed with Joe Biden to her left.
Like a night at the Oscar’s, I was more interested in the photo ops with the red carpet candidates than what went on inside the building, in this case the lack of substance in the President’s speech.
