Just When You Think You Can Take a Break The Repubs Show Up
I was planning a nice quiet weekend, maybe taking Bernie for a walk at the dog park today, watching the Super Bowl on television tomorrow, chilling out before Super Tuesday.
Then McCain showed up in Nashville and decided to “assume” he’s the Republican party nominee, his words, not mine. Oh! Dare we remind him of what happens when one “assumes”? Anyway, he was cheered by the geriatric ward escapees who attended the rally. Let me put it this way, folks. I will be 59 tomorrow and these folks looked old enough to be my grandparents.
Naturally he pledged to spend us deeper into debt by keeping the troops in Iraq forever if necessary. He should have been in Clarksville with the Fort Campbell soldiers (101st) who have been on several deployments to Iraq for fifteen month tours rather than the usual twelve months. Yesterday, the soldiers met with Secretary of Defense Gates on base and expressed their concerns. Today McCain emphasized that he will grow the military. And, just how long will that take?
McCain went through the litany of names. Howard Baker, Fred Thompson (who has not endorsed McCain) and other prominent (Tennessee) names were mentioned. It’s becoming rather boring to hear McCain name his friends and colleagues when I never seem to hear any of them mention him. Even during the debates, when it comes to economic policy McCain runs through his name dropping list, as if to reassure us that even if he doesn’t know Jack about economic policy, he has friends who do. Well, personally, I would like to think that he knew more than what he learned by reading Wealth of Nations.
During an “in depth” interview (my tongue is so far into my cheek that I’m gagging), McCain said that when he was at home he never gave up the remote. Does that surprise anyone? And, why would we care?
But, his real tie to Tennessee is that his son attended Vanderbilt University and married a Cookeville girl. Well, damn! Put that all together in the McCain package and I guess we’re all “fixin’” to head on out to vote for him on Tuesday.
As if McCain in Nashville wasn’t enough, Mike Huckabee is stopping by Chattanooga on Monday morning to share the word. I do suppose our orange state will blush into bright red on Tuesday.
