The Cost of Medicare/Medicaid vs. Cost of War

Interestingly enough the $3.1 Trillion budget proposal produced by the administration cuts roughly $200B from Medicare/Medicaid and gives approximately $200B for the Wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.  Tit for Tat?

Well, isn’t it interesting that Bush would prefer to continue to fight a no end war that has clearly lost sight of its goals than to provide healthcare for the poor and elderly.  Compassionate conservatism?

Most people have complained that Bush didn’t rally the American people by getting us involved in the war.  He didn’t ask us to sacrifice anything.  Instead, he told us to go shopping.  Americans wanted to be involved.  We wanted to “do something”.  We wanted to feel a bit of the pain of sacrifice.  But, no.  We were told to go shopping.

Perhaps, it was all a part of the ruse.  Divert our attention from the war.  Let the Decider and Dick handle it.  Go shopping and spend money.  Stack up credit card debt.  Everything is going to work out just fine.

Now, we know that our sacrifice is far greater than anyone could have anticipated.  While we were out shopping and going about our daily lives, leaving the big decisions to the Bush administration, Congress fell asleep.  No one was balancing the books.

Now the truth is coming out.  To fund the Bush-Cheney War, we will spend approximately $200B according the 2009 Budget proposal.  And, where is that money going to come from?  Well, the proposal cuts Medicare and Medicaid funding by roughly $200B.

We have watched the government who sent our men and women into war neglect them when they returned.  Now, our government is prepared to neglect our elderly and our poor.

Maybe Kanye West should have been given more air time after Katrina.  In the end, he was on point… and that is sad.
