Super Tuesday Shockers
Did Super Tuesday decide anything?
The GOP more easily than the Dems divided up the delegates. According to the totals I’ve seen this morning on CNN, John McCain is clearly the frontrunner with 559 delegates. The Republican nominee will need to net 1,191 to be declared the winner.
Romney and Huckabee are still in the race, according to them. But, the reality is that it’s going to take a miracle for either to become competitive. Of course, Huckabee seems to have a pocket full of miracles.
The Democrats are far less well defined as far as delegates. In fact, I’m not sure anyone knows exactly how many delegates Obama or Hillary have in their win columns. Last night (early this morning) it was announced that Clinton had won the most states. Now, I have to ask, who cares? This isn’t about states. It’s about delegates.
So, for a while it seemed that Hillary was still in the lead, if you were counting delegates.
Then, the tornadoes ripped through all of Tennessee and diverted our attention from delegates to survival. It was a stormy night that took 48 lives between Arkansas and Tennessee. All thought of delegates and votes vanished and thoughts of neighbors and friends took over for a while. The storm finally blew over leaving death and destruction. The state woke up to help one another and find shelter for those without.
As I took a breather, I began checking for the Democratic delegate count. And, what’s the bottom line? I don’t think anyone knows for sure. In some counts, Hillary is in the lead. In others, Obama is now in the lead.
Politico claims that Obama has taken the delegate lead. NPR claims that the count is “uncertain.” And, the analysis goes on.
I like the idea of candidates earning the delegates they actually won, rather than the idea of winner take all. It seems to give every vote a louder voice. With all the care the Democrats have given to the selection of delegates by districts rather than by states, I have to wonder how the Super Delegates will change the voters’ voices at the convention.
