Is Obama’s Campaign Ready to Stumble?
If there is one thing we aren’t ready to see, it is Barack Obama (or Hillary Clinton) claiming frontrunner status. This could be the stumbling block for Obama’s campaign.
Reported by Politico in Ben Smith’s Blog, speaking of Clinton’s chances of winning as discussed by David Plouffe (Obama’s campaign manager) on a conference call:
The only way she could do it is by winning most of the rest of the contests by 25 to 30 points,” he said. “Even the most creative math really does not get her, ever, back to even in terms of pledged delegates.”
“This is not about votes — it’s about delegates,” [David] Plouffe said.
Sometimes, it’s just better to keep your mouth shut. This could have been one of those times.
I’ve already cast my vote this primary season. But, I have friends in Texas who haven’t. We discuss politics and candidates quite often and I have to tell Mr. Plouffe (and Senator Obama), it may be about delegates to you, but to my friends in Texas it’s about their votes.
May I remind Mr. Plouffe that the Democrats are a party of the people… not a party of the delegates, and the last thing you want to do is to piss off the people. Don’t take us for granted. Don’t start clumping us into piles and calling us a delegate until you have counted our votes. Don’t “assume” anything Mr. Plouffe… or we will show you how to run the table for Clinton through Wisconsin, Texas, Pennsylvania, Ohio…. and even Hawaii.
We are in a process that is very near and dear to us. We are voting, something you, Mr. Plouffe, haven’t seen us do in such a mass in the past fifty years (if you are that old). And, how dare you even hint at dismissing our votes!
Mr. Plouffe, it is clear that you just don’t get it. We want to name our candidate. We want to be a part of the victory. We do not want you or Maggie Williams telling us how you expect us to vote or that your candidate is the self-proclaimed winner. That is our job. That is what the voters want to do this year. We have worked hard for this honor. We don’t want to be talked down to or be told who the winner is. We want to stand behind our nominee… the one we select… and with him or her standing as our leader. We want to stand united behind him or her, lift our candidate onto our shoulders and celebrate our nominee.
We will then stand behind our candidate with solidarity and strength as we all face the Republicans in November.
