No Endorsement from John Edwards
Everyone knows by now that Barack Obama made a not so “secret” trip to Chapel Hill, North Carolina over the weekend to court John Edwards. Over a week ago, Hillary Clinton made the same journey.
What is the result? Nothing yet. While the conversation is still enjoying a bit of privacy, we all know that both candidates are looking for an endorsement.
Let’s hope that John Edwards doesn’t go out on a limb and make an endorsement… at least not yet. There will be plenty of time for that. Let the candidates fight it out between themselves. Let Edwards’ supporters make their own choices, without having to weigh his opinion.
There is little that an endorsement by Edwards can do to affect the race at this time. It seems to me that it would be far better for Edwards to hold his endorsement until it will become relevant.
If Edwards decides to work with the party nominee in the general election, it would be far better if he didn’t have to explain why he picked one or the other, especially if he endorses one and the other gets the nomination. Edwards can pull in votes for either Obama or Clinton. There is a base of loyal Edwards supporters. But, we would rather see him support the party’s nominee than one of the party’s two candidates in the primaries.
