End-Fidel-ity
Fidel Castro has resigned as the leader of Cuba at the age of 81, citing health and mobility as part of the reason. What does it mean for future relations with the U.S.?
With the Cuban National Assembly scheduled to meet on Sunday, the announcement was probably scheduled to allow time for Fidel’s brother Raul to assume the reins.
I suppose we have no idea what to expect. Although Raul has actually been acting as “interim” dictator under his brother’s eyes, we are left to wonder how the new leader will rule.
Will he pursue a more progressive approach towards international relationships, with the U.S. in particular? Or, will he keep the world at a distance? Much remains to be seen.
But, all in all, a change in power is a hope for the future.
