Barack Obama Declared Frontrunner

Texas and Ohio are the two states that stand between Barack Obama and the Democratic Party nomination for the President of the United States.  Although those two states won’t put him over the magic number of 2025 for number of delegates he needs to sew up the nomination, it could widen the gap so far that Hill’s hill will be too steep even for the Clintons.

Obama is picking up union endorsements faster than they can be announced.  And, once considered to have “rock star” appeal, it appears that Obama now has “rock star” status.  He is pulling in crowds that range fill stadiums regardless of the day of the week or the time of day.

John McCain is attacking Obama, almost assuming his opponent.  The attacks are based on controversy over public funding for the national campaign.  If that is as tough as it gets, well… just for the sake of sport, let’s hope McCain can dig up something a little more exciting and controversial.

In the background Hillary is scurrying about trying to gain the votes of the under 50 year old white women, who until recently had predominently voted for her.  Of course, I’m a little put out that women were assumed to be Clinton voters, especially older women.  I am one of those older women and assuming I will do anything is not a wise assumption on anyone’s part.

Even Bill seemed to try to soften the fall today.  He told a crowd that if Hillary didn’t win Texas and Ohio, she probably wouldn’t be able to win the nomination.  In true Clinton fashion and in an attempt to rally the Clintonistas, he concluded that if she didn’t win it would be their fault.  Okay… whether the crowd bought into the rhetoric is hard to tell, but sitting in front of the television somewhat removed from the moment, I didn’t buy it.

The remaining political excitement for the week will be the Democratic Party debate tomorrow night.  Barack will have to stay cool and careful not to make an error in speech.  Hillary will have to keep one leg stuck out from behind the podium, hoping to trip him up.
