By now, everyone who reads or listens and pays attention is aware that The Drudge Report broke the story of Prince Harry serving on the frontlines with the British military in Afghanistan.
That was the news. Now, it’s history. But, I question the necessity of Drudge disclosing the event. Before anyone goes off the deep end, I must say that I am not… am NOT… in favor of censorship in any manner. However, I am in favor of responsible journalism. To that end, I question the responsibility of disclosing the young prince’s participation in the war effort in Afghanistan.
Was it something we needed to know or could we have waited to learn of the prince’s service until a time when it would not affect not only his safety, but that of his comrades? Could The Drudge Report not have anticipated the disturbance it would cause in the effort of not only the Royal, but that of his company?
And, finally, are there no boundaries? We have seen paparazzi chase and hound the likes of Britney Spears ad nauseum, disclosing her every move. We have watched David Hasselhoff’s most unflattering image splayed across our television screens. We have seen the exploitation of the prince’s mother, Princess Diana, to the point of her death.
Now, Prince Harry is being brought out of Afghanistan for his protection and for the protection of his company. Have we gone too far with reporting news that isn’t necessary? My vote says The Drudge Report went too far, too fast.
