Has Obama’s campaign reached its high point? A wave of momentum has carried Barack Obama through the primaries for the past month, but he is losing his edge?
I hadn’t thought about that until last night. I was still surfing high on the momentum and the positive change message. Then, my husband said, “Obama looks like he may be losing steam.” I was taken aback. What could he be talking about?
The news reports came on and I watched an Obama clip. He looked tired, but he was delivering his message. In fact, the crowd surrounding him looked tired and while the size of the crowd was the Obama usual, there seemed to be a lack of enthusiasm. Now, don’t get me wrong. Had it been any other candidate or any other crowd, it would have looked like a major successful rally. But, for Obama it looked a little sluggish.
Today I looked at the recent polls from Ohio and it seems that within the past few days Clinton has made a slight rise. In fact, maybe it’s only a few points, but she is climbing in the hearts and minds of the voters in Ohio. Maybe, Ohio is her state to lose. No one ever expected Obama to take it with the momentum he has shown in some of the more recent primaries. But, the tendency has been for Obama to continue to close the gap right up to the vote. In Ohio it appears that Hillary has found her voice (again) and is beginning to make inroads with the voters.
It may be too little too late for Hillary. And, of course, Ohio isn’t the only state that counts. Everyone knew that Texas and Ohio would be tough for Obama. He has closed the wide margin that was reported a month ago. And, in truth, even if he loses both Texas and Ohio tomorrow, it will probably be by a slim margin, not sufficient to cast Clinton back into major contention.
There probably isn’t enough time for Hillary to make a major comeback and take the lead. But, if the polls coming out of Ohio today are any indication, the Obama wave may be cresting.
