Well, it looks like a split right down the middle. Both candidates are hanging in there as the results slowly trickle in. Many caucus goers are just getting home. From what I have been able to discern from my contact in Texas, Obama and Clinton are counting votes and delegates one at a time, one going to him, the next to her, another for him, another for her.
It will be some time before we know the total delegate split across the four states that voted today. But, it has been a day that won’t be forgotten by most voters in today’s primary states.
A look back across the day in Irving, Texas begins with a lunch time snapshot of supporters still stomping for their candidate of choice, the lines still long and lengthening at 4:30 this afternoon. I was told by my favorite photographer that ordinarily on any other election day in Irving a voter would stroll into the precinct voting area, wander about choosing which of the ladies he wished to approach for this ballot, and take his time marking his ballot. Not so today.
By 7:30 when he arrived back at the polling place to attend the evening caucus, primary voters were still exiting the voting areas. As they left, the caucus goers began to line up.
The numbers of caucus attendees grew until the school parking lot was full, the grocery market lot across the street was full, cars lined the curbs for up to four blocks. As seen in the last picture below, with an overwhelming crowd waiting to attend the caucus, pushing and crowding to get into the gym, the building was so full that they had to divide the caucuses by precincts, allowing a room full of people in at a time, leaving a playground full and overflowing into the streets full of waiting caucus growers standing in the dark and cold.
I would like to thank Anthony, who has been suffering with the flu, for taking his camera and cell phone with him today to send pictures and updates. And, most especially, I would like to thank him for fighting the crowd to grab his opportunity to vote for our candidate of choice.
