Wyoming Matters

All eyes move to Wyoming on Saturday.  The Democratic candidates have already moved in.  And, for once in Democratic history, Wyoming counts.

So, what’s up for grabs in Wyoming?  18 delegates.  Twelve will be determined on Saturday by the caucus process.  According to reports five are Super Delegates and no one has ever said what or who the 6th one may be.  Of course, with Wyoming being Dick Cheney’s home state, I have been afraid to ask.

Wyoming is a red state.  Republicans out number Democrats 10 to 1 and it’s pretty much a given that in the general election the state will go with McCain.  That said, in the past the measly 18 delegates that attend the Democratic National Convention have more or less been window dressing.  But, this year with the stakes so high and every delegate’s vote as valuable as the price of gold… or maybe a gallon of gas… the Democratic candidates are courting every human who may attend a caucus.

Once taken for granted or overlooked, the citizens of Wyoming now find the political spotlight focused squarely on them.  The Republican party held their caucus so long ago that Mitt Romney was still in the race and won the caucus.  But, the announcement that he had taken Wyoming was seldom mentioned and with little fanfare.

Hillary has taken her Solution strategy and Barack is asking the caucus goers to “Stand Up for Change”.  Apparently, the Dems of Wyoming are taking their fifteen minutes of fame seriously.  Ordinarily caucus meetings would be held in someone’s living room, but in light of the overwhelming turnout reported from other caucus states, the comfort of sipping hot chocolate from your neighbor’s sofa is not going to happen, as the caucus meetings are being moved to town halls in order to contain the expected turnout.

Oh, by the way, the governor of Wyoming is a Democrat.  What’s up with that?  Anyway, according to some reports he is so unhappy with the Democratic choices that he may not attend the Denver convention.  Maybe, he’s the # 6 man.
