March Madness: Politics or Basketball

It’s March, well into March, and by now we should know which teams are going to the NCAA tournament… and we should know who our Democratic nominee is.  I’m a little uncomfortable with both my tournament favorite and my political favorite this year.

I’m leaning very heavily towards Barack Obama for the nomination.  He got my vote in the primary and so far he has done nothing to change my mind… nor has anyone else.  With a reported 199 delegate lead, I probably should feel a little more comfortable snuggled in my easy chair.  But, the political tides are turning this year faster than the blink of an eye or the exit of a campaign strategist.

For the big basketball game, it’s Carolina all the way… and for anyone who doesn’t know, there is only one “Carolina”… not, South Carolina, or North Carolina State, but the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill.  That’s it.  No discussion there.

But, back to an issue that is almost as important… politics.  Where have all the politicians gone?  I haven’t seen hide nor hair of Barack Obama or Hillary Clinton all day.  And, thank goodness I haven’t seen John McCain.

With Mississippi voters heading out Tuesday to cast their primary votes, it seems that someone, Obama or Clinton, would have thrown a barb or two.  Perhaps, both candidates are getting a much needed rest today.  There has been media silence on the candidates, although there has been much talk about how to get Florida and Michigan reinvested in the process.  I’m hoping that gets settled this week.  We need to get back to the real issues.

Mississippi will be the next target on the roadmap to Denver.  From all the polls, it looks like an Obama win, but we know how the polls have missed the vote so far.  And, then the long walk to Pennsylvania.  Clinton is ahead in the polls 49% to Obama’s 43%.  The polls also reflect that 7% are undecided.  With weeks to go before the primary vote in Pennsylvania anything can happen and probably will.

With no candidates around today, I suppose I’ll just savor Carolina’s victory over Duke last night to clinch the ACC Championship.  I hope they can do as well in the ACC tournament.  So, for now…  Gimme a “C”… and that’s not for Clinton.
