As governor Eliot Spitzer of New York apologized to his family and the public for his involvement in a prostitution ring, his first lady stood by his side, albeit with lowered eyes.

Is this becoming the norm?  It’s easier to apologize than get permission.  And, why are we all so accepting?  Of course, I’m sure all of us have had to apologize for something, some indiscretion, but hopefully not of this magnitude. 

MSNBC reports:

“I have acted in a way that violates my obligations to my family … my sense of right and wrong,” he said at a news conference at his Manhattan office. “I must now dedicate some time to rededicate my trust to my family.”

Spitzer’s wife stood at his side, her hands behind her back and her eyes cast downward, as he made the statement.

How did Spitzer get caught?

The New York Times earlier reported that a person with knowledge of the governor’s role believes the governor is identified as a client in court papers filed last week. Four people allegedly connected to a high-end prostitution ring called Emperors Club VIP were arrested in that case.

The Times reported that a person briefed on the federal investigation said Spitzer was caught on a federal wiretap arranging to meet with a high-priced prostitute at a Washington hotel last month.

Spitzer learned he had been implicated when a federal official contacted his staff last Friday, the person briefed on the case told the Times.

Now, that takes care of the governor.  My question is why do these women who go through these horrible episodes of betrayal and public humiliation continue to stand by their men? 

My answer, it’s something more than love… or at least different than love… that keeps them by their husbands’ sides.

Update:  Is he guilty?

According to MSNBC:

His statement came hours after the New York Times reported he told senior administration officials he had been involved in a prostitution ring.
