The Clinton Campaign’s Stump Stomping Stumbles

While there has been much talk about Senator Obama’s string of wins that swept twelve states, Senator Hillary Clinton seems to be creating a string of her own, a string of stump stomping stumbles.

First there was the fear mongering commercial that pictured a young eight year old girl asleep in her bed, a voice over quietly asking who we want to to answer the phone when it rings at 3:00 in the morning.  Well, apparently, the pictured eight year old, now a precinct captain for Barack Obama, grew out of her early morning fears.

As stated by a group of military advisers, if there isn’t a plan in place before the early morning call, it really doesn’t matter who answers the phone or if it is answered.  Clinton has shown no more of a public plan that the next candidate, but did seem to leave the kid’s bedroom door ajar sufficiently for a McCain toehold.

The commercial was designed to show Obama’s lack of experience and lack of preparedness to become Commander in Chief.  It may have garnered a few votes in Texas but it played poorly across the nation, especially among more sophisticated Democrats.  The ad got a thumbs down across the board.

No sooner had the ad run than Clinton hinted at her second stumble.  First she hinted that Obama would make a good Vice President.  In Mississippi she smiled that a vote for her may deliver the opportunity for a vote for both, Obama in the passenger’s seat.  Mr. Bill wasn’t as delicate.  He explained that having Obama as her second would unite the party, bringing the urban areas where Obama is a force to be reckoned with to merge with the rural blue collar voters where the mrs. has held a slight advantage.

If anything, that idea back fired and played into the hands of the Obama camp.  If Obama is qualified for the designated replacement position, how could it be said that he isn’t qualified to drive the nation?  That has proved a hard one to answer.  The Clinton’s, to my knowledge have not offered an explanation.

Instead, this afternoon in Mississippi, after Obama made his declaration that he is running for the office of President, not Vice President, Senator Clinton has seemingly recalled that feeler.  Voters have realized that the hint of taking Barack Obama along for the ride was designed solely to get the former First Lady under the wheel.  Yet, it comes as close to an endorsement of Obama from the Clinton camp as we will ever see.
