Barack Obama Speaks Out on the Today Show

Following yesterday’s overwhelming win in Mississippi, Barack Obama responded to the remarks made by Geraldine Ferraro this morning on Today.

Andrea Mitchell reported that Barack Obama won 9 out of 10 black votes in Mississippi.  In the meantime, in Pennsylvania Hillary Clinton tried to explain comments by Ferrarro.  There is no need to repeat the remarks.  Once was enough.

Obama called Ferraro’s remarks absurd and called for Ferraro’s dismissal.  Ferraro refused to back down from her comments, saying that any time anyone made a comment it is called racist, claiming that she was being attacked as racist because she is white.  Oh, please.

Matt Lauer asked Obama where the race stands after Mississippi.  Obama remarked that his campaign has regained ground and that he is going to keep on delivering his message.

When asked about Ferraro’s comments, Obama responded, “If you were to get a handbook on what is the path to the presidency, it wouldn’t begin with being a black man named Barack Obama.”

Ferraro is shocked that she is being taken to task for the comments.

Obama responded that the former VP candidate is involved in the slice and dice kind of politics that split the party.  He further said that the comment was a ludicrous as saying that Hillary Clinton is where she is because she is a woman.  Beyond that he tried to dismiss the comments.

Barack Obama refused to comment on whether Hillary would be on the list for VP if he wins.  His comment seems to stay in the moment.  He isn’t going to be presumptuous, saying that he hasn’t won the nomination yet.  After the nomination is won is the time to consider the VP list.

When asked about Spitzer’s situation, Obama took the high road, suggesting that the most important thing is for the Spitzer family to work out their situation, then to look beyond that to the political situation.

Once again, Obama didn’t lash out at anyone saying his job is not to sit in judgment.  That’s a refreshing take on today’s political world when it seems that the only way to win is to degenerate the opponent.  I only hope that Senator Obama can maintain his level of political optimism.
