Spitzer Resigns on Hump Day
How appropriate! Governor Eliot Spitzer announced his resignation as the governor of New York today. What else could he do?
Rumor has it that his wife was asking him to stay the course, but amid threats of impeachment Spitzer made the only decision that was feasible.
Reportedly having spent nearly $80,000 on prostitutes in recent times, we are left wondering if he still has money on deposit with the Emperor’s Club. Emperor Spitzer may have his clothes (now) but he lost his job and in all likelihood his family is hanging in the balance.
Reportedly the delay in his announcement of resignation was due to working out details with those who caught him with his pants down, so to speak. I’m sure he is trying to save his ass from prosecution. But, the Sheriff of Wall Street has made enemies over the years and no one seems to be speaking up for him.
Among his friends, Jim Cramer appeared on the Today Show and instead of defending Spitzer, the best he could offer was “he screwed up.” I hope that wasn’t intended as a pun. But, the truth is Spitzer did screw up. When you are sitting atop the pile of holier-than-thou righteous and pious, the fall is much farther and the landing is much harder. That’s the problem with the overly zealous and overly righteous. They never stop to think that they could get caught. And, when they do… well, the safety net of friendship seems to fold up and move on.
This afternoon Spitzer has to be feeling alone and abandoned. The only persons who are likely to speak in his defense are his attorneys… and like “Kristen” he has to pay them to perform.
