Senators Vote Against Extending Bush’s Tax Cuts
The Senate today voted on the extension of the Bush tax cuts.
The chamber voted 52-47 to reject a move by Sen. Lindsay Graham, R-S.C., to extend Bush’s tax cuts for middle- and higher-income taxpayers, investors and people inheriting businesses and big estates.
That vote came immediately after the Senate gave a sweeping 99-1 tally to an amendment by Sen. Max Baucus, D-Mont., endorsing cuts aimed at low-income workers, married couples and people with children.
The vote really didn’t mean that much. The Bush cuts won’t expire until three years from now. But the vote did give us as voters an opportunity to see how the candidates feel about the Bush tax plan.
Arizona GOP Sen. John McCain, Republican presidential nominee-in-waiting, voted for the full roster of Bush tax cuts. Rivals Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., and Barack Obama, D-Ill., both voted against them.
So, I guess there is nothing new under the sun. McCain supports the Bush plan. Clinton and Obama went on record, voting along party lines. Not much of a surprise, but since one of the three will be in the White House when the tax cuts expire, it gives us something to hold onto… something on the record.
