Michael Kinsley of Time Magazine appeared on The Charlie Rose Show. According to Michael Kinsley of Time Magazine, we don’t need to be talking about race right now. We need to be talking about money. Kinsley said the one conversation we need to be having is about the economy.
Kinsley, a self pronounced pessimist, says we are heading into a recession, unless we are already there. He said the chickens are coming home to roost. We have had six or seven years of deficits in good times. Losing your home used to happen in the pits of recession, not at the beginning.
When asked “What should we be doing?” Kinsley responded that he was very suspicious of the stimulus package. The “recession” was caused by going into debt and going into more debt will make it worse. We are borrowing from other governments… for example, the Chinese. It’s sad that we are borrowing from the Chinese to finance our life styles. Clinton passed a surplus on to Bush and it has been squandered.
“If we are going into deficit spending we should be repairing our bridges and infrastructures,” Kinsley said.
There isn’t much difference in the amounts of the Democratic candidates stimulus costs, but some of it Kinsley doesn’t understand. Obama emphasizes Iraq war end as a means of saving money, which Kinsley understands. Clinton has ideas Kinsley is not in favor of, such as wiping out graffiti in cities. He doesn’t follow her reasoning.
Given the opportunity to talk directly with each candidate Kinsley would want to know plans for the economy and ask pointed questions of the candidates. “Hillary, what is the point of the commission or $30million for street lighting? Why are you so eager to see house prices go up? People don’t have interest in housing prices going up. We can afford more housing if they go down.”
Kinsley believes Obama will get the nomination. “He has more delegates. More and more people are realizing that Obama has touched something” that has “landed on the Democrats like a huge gift”.
In closing Kinsley said he is not so sure that Obama can beat McCain because he respects the ruthlessness of the Republicans.
