407,000 Unemployed as of March 29, 2008

The number of unemployed who are standing in the queue reached 407,000.  There is not count of the number who have given up.  That’s the glitch in the system.  Some unemployed run out of benefits, others just give up.  That said, the total number of unemployed in the country is unknown.  The number is the highest in two years.  And, if I had enough money to place a bet, I would bet that the number continues to rise.

Economists had expected the number to be around 365,000.  And, of course, as always with government agencies, there is a spin.

A government analyst said some of the big increase in claims may have been related to an early Easter holiday this year, where claims that weren’t filed or processed during the holiday week were pushed forward into the following week.

Okay… blame it on Easter.
