Weekend Surprise: Mark Penn Steps Out of Clinton Campaign

» by sinde in: Candidates

The weekends always seem to bring some bit of news that is designed to occur with little notice and less comment.  However, many of us have learned over time that the best little confessions happen after the end of business on Friday and prior to the Monday bell on Wall Street.

So, it is this weekend.  Mark Penn, campaign strategist for the Hillary Clinton campaign has stepped outside the campaign.  No wonder with the the scurry of excuses and denials of the past week.  And, so it is that we may never know the truth as to on the behalf of whom of what he met with some Colombian officials to discuss a trade agreement.

“After the events of the last few days, Mark Penn has asked to give up his role as chief strategist of the Clinton Campaign,” campaign manager Maggie Williams said in a statement released Sunday. “Mark, and Penn, Schoen and Berland Associates, Inc. will continue to provide polling and advice to the campaign.”

So as we see, this is a bit of an “oh, by the way” announcement that carries very little weight.  As I first put it, Mr. Penn has only stepped outside the campaign, not away from it.  I’m sure whatever maneuverings have been taking place will continue, only from the shadows.
