The War in Iraq, The War in Afghanistan, the Candidates and the General

“We are no longer staring into the abyss of defeat.”  That is what McCain said today about the War in Iraq.  To withdraw would be reckless, according to McCain.

Obama responded by written message saying that going into Iraq was reckless.

Violence has spiked in Iraq in the past two weeks.  After a lull last week, the weekend brought heavy fighting in Sadr City.  Rounds were fired into the Green Zone, killing three with others injured.

It looks like an abyss to me.  Once upon a time, the Green Zone was the safe haven.  In recent days, it has come under fire and is no longer as safe as it used to be.

Dick Cheney made a speech today also, before a group of soldiers.  Interestingly, when soliders in Afghanistan were asked who the soldiers supported, they seemed to be primarily divided between Clinton and Obama, something that was unheard four years ago.

But, I suppose we will just have to wait and see what the President’s general has to say tomorrow when he testifies before Congress.  General Petraeus will face some hard questions, but it is expected that most of the criticism from the committee will be directed towards the administration.
