There Is a Democratic Debate Tonight!
With “the Boss” endorsing Obama today, the Illinois senator has to feel pretty good going into tonight’s debate. And, as for Clinton, well… she’s going to probably be experiencing change first hand. After all, much of her theme music and the music Bill has surrounding his rallies is Springsteen. With the Boss casting his vote for Barack Obama, it is doubtful that the Clinton’s will be playing cuts from his latest CD to close out her speeches in the future.
This is the first debate since February and much has happened since then. Barack has given a speech about race that awed almost everyone. He has denounced Rev. Wright’s controversial rhetoric. He has gone bowling (something he… we all would probably like to forget). He watched the Final Four with the boys and a mug of beer. And, he has said that some of us small town folks were bitter, clinging to our guns and religion. Damn! The man has it the nail on the head.
In the meantime Hillary has been stomping her way through Pennsylvania and Indiana, making a few detours to raise money. She has dissed Obama and almost gone so far as to call him names, but stopped short just slapping the “elitist” label on his lapel. She has slammed shots with the boys and downed a mug of beer. She has offered to have a “bowl off” with Barack and has condemned him for saying that some small town Americans are bitter. And, of course, she has told us about a fantasy trip to Bosnia and recently she has touted a hunting expedition with her father. The hunting trip has been neither verified nor denied, but I would want some verification before I give her a high five for killing a bird. And, there has been another campaign shake-up, pushing Mark Penn to the sidelines.
Since this race has almost turned into a three way, I must say that Bill has done more damage than good. I swear, I do believe in my heart that he is trying to totally sabotage her campaign.
The polls have been up and down and holding on occasion. Every nuance from a candidate is tested. Barack took a dip after the Wright tapes surfaced. Hillary came under fire for not having come under fire. And, Bill is busy changing the feet in his mouth.
So, that brings us up to the debate tonight. It would be nice for the candidates to debate the issues, but there is so little difference that a “ditto” would explain the follow-up. It looks as if it is going to be a popularity contest unless something happens to really upset one of the apple carts. I’m looking for the Clinton attack to come on tonight and the Obama duck act where everything she says rolls right off his back. As much as I hate to say it, tonight’s debate holds about as much interest for me as a NASCAR race. Unless, there is a collision, we are just going to watch the two continue to turn left.
