Laura Bush Calls for Aid to Myanmar, Where Was She After Katrina?
Well, well, well. The First Lady is chastising the government of Myanmar for slow reaction to the weekend’s cyclone that has left more than 4,000 dead.
Of course, we need to assist Myanmar. The situation in the country was already in turmoil following the recent Buddhist situation where we saw monks being beaten and killed in the streets. And, of course, the world will come to the aid of Myanmar.
However, I am outraged that Ms. Bush would use this platform to make her voice heard when she has been as quiet as a church mouse on our performance following Katrina. Where was her voice following Katrina when our dead were floating in the streets and canals? What did our government do to rush in and assist our own citizens? Does anyone remember “Brownie” and his “good job?” Does anyone remember how long it took the President to even go to New Orleans?
Again, we have seen one of our national representatives, in this case the First Lady, stand before the world and criticize a country for inaction and lack of care and concern for its people. Well, Mrs. Bush, we need to clean up our own back yard before we go about picking up litter across the world.
In the name of humanitarian aid, everyone will agree with Mrs. Bush. But, before we use such strong words to condemn another government, perhaps you need to remember the total inefficiency and inactivity of your husband’s administration when part of our country was storm damaged and your husband’s administration failed to meet our citizens’ “basic needs.” In fact, some of those needs still have not been met.
