It probably won’t happen. I can’t imagine why John Edwards would tie himself into the position of Vice Presidential candidate again. But, wouldn’t that be a dream ticket?
As I waited for the endorsement speech on CNN, I watched ABC Evening News. Not that Charlie Gibson and George Stephanopoulos can be forgiven for the debate debacle they moderated, but I watched as the duo announced that John Edwards was about to endorse Barack Obama in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Of course, the news had already been leaked but it was worth watching the announcement… especially when Stephanopoulos announced that he had just received a text message from one of Clinton’s advisers. The message was simple. “Ouch!”
Edwards’ endorsement gave Obama another superdelegate and pretty much locked in 20 pledge delegates that Edwards influences. In other words, Edwards’ endorsement and the pledge delegates it brings along offset the 20 delegates Clinton earned in the West Virginia primary yesterday.
All that aside, Edwards spoke of his admiration of Hillary Clinton and shared his own message… the fight against poverty, before going into his endorsement. It was a good speech, not his best, but good. Obama followed with a good speech, again not the best I have seen him give, but good enough. At the conclusion, the two men stood together looking like a pretty good Democratic ticket to me.
We may as well accept that Clinton won’t be the second name on the Democratic ticket. It just isn’t going to happen. And, I seriously doubt that Edwards would accept another run at VP. But, wouldn’t that make a terrific ticket? Two relatively young men with energy and vision, like minded in their goals, both from poor backgrounds, well educated and extremely well versed in the needs of the country. Well, it may not work for them, but it sure would work for me.
