The Farm Bill Fumble

Well, perhaps, it was too good to be true.  And, now it has been learned that the House sent an incomplete copy of The Farm Bill to the White House, leaving out some 34 pages that had not been printed on the sacred parchment.  So, The Prez vetoed a bill that really wasn’t The Farm Bill.

So, amid all the joy and glee, the dark cloud appeared.  Now, there should be some easy way to get this thing worked out, but it seems that we are going to have to have an instant replay of the entire Farm Bill.

Action stalled, however, after the discovery that Congress had omitted a 34-page section of the bill when lawmakers sent the massive measure to the White House. That means Bush vetoed a different bill from the one Congress passed, leaving leaders scrambling to figure out whether it could become law.

Democrats hoped to pass the entire bill, again, on Thursday under expedited rules usually reserved for unopposed legislation. The correct version would then be sent to Bush for another expected veto.

Lawmakers also probably will have to pass an extension of current farm law, which expires Friday.

“We will have to repass the whole thing, as will the Senate,” said Rep. Louise Slaughter, D-N.Y. “We can’t let the farm bill just die.”

Of course, there could be lots of discussion about this, but let’s just say that the House is going back to the drawing board and hoping with the 34 pages in place they can pass the complete version of The Farm Bill.

What a day to have the hiccups!
