What is Hillary Clinton’s Next Play?

Not that anyone needs a “heads up” on the South Dakota and Montana primaries.  We have all but reached the end of the road.  And, when the sun sets tomorrow night, Barack Obama will be in St. Paul, Minnesota giving a speech in the very convention center where John McCain will appear at the Republican National Convention in September.  And, Hillary Clinton will be giving a speech from New York.

New York?  Yep, she sent her team home or invited them to the New York speech.  Should we look at tomorrow night’s speeches as a victory rally… the big victory rally… and a concession speech… the big concession.  It’s hard to say.  What seems like a wind down to a primary season that lasted almost four months longer than anyone expected, could be just a breath catcher for both candidates.  Let’s hope we will have a nominee by Wednesday.

The real question isn’t whether Barack Obama is going to be the Democratic nominee but what Hillary will do from tomorrow.  Will she take the RBC decision to the Credentials Committee and fight on until August?  Will she admit that the national election is more important to the country than her desire to be President?  Will she…. and Bill…. jump on the Obama bandwagon and show active support for the nominee?

In fact, what Hillary does from tomorrow on will play as much a part in electing our next President as anything Barack Obama can do.  Regardless of the name of the winner and the so-called loser in the Democratic nominating process, it will take the full and active support of the other to win in November.

All that said, where should we direct our eyes and ears tomorrow?  I’m suggesting that we play the two remaining primaries in the background and focus on the House of Representatives and the Senate.  The tipping point could well be sitting in the House.  If the superdelegates do their part to unite the party, the lady in the pantsuit should be singing late tomorrow night.
