The Truth Hurts John McCain

» by sinde in: John McCain

Well, the comment was later given an apology, but in fact, it is the truth.

A top adviser to Republican presidential candidate John McCain apologized on Monday after he was quoted as saying a September 11-type attack before the November election would benefit McCain.

It is well known that John McCain is running on his prisoner of war record and his so-called expertise on foreign policy.  Once again, I don’t believe being a prisoner of war is a qualifier as an expert on foreign policy.  We have seen McCain stumble through the mix-up of Shi’a and Sunni.  We have seen him confuse the Iranian insurgents with Al Qaeda.  Yet, he comes across to many Americans as the man who knows foreign policy, something I haven’t seen.

McCain is most comfortable supporting the War in Iraq, as if he has a real plan of victory.  But, back in the old days I’m sure Lyndon Johnson and others thought they had a plan for victory in Vietnam.  They didn’t and McCain doesn’t today.

About the only thing that would cause the weak minded to flock to the McCain campaign is another attack on our country.  Of course, anyone with one eye and half sense would now know better but I’m sure there are some who would become fear ridden and look for retaliation against the shadow of terrorism.  And, with McCain at the helm we would probably send bombers to Iran.  That’s supposition on my part, of course, but it seems that Iran blinks on the universal radar more than any other country these days.

Let me say first and foremost that I am totally in favor of retaliation against anyone who attacks our country.  We cannot sit like ducks in a barrel when attacked.  But… Well…. As we all know Iraq had nothing to do with the attack on September 11th.  We have all but forgotten Osama bin Laden and Al Qaeda.  Chasing terrorists through the mountainous regions of Afghanistan and the borders of Pakistan doesn’t seem to have the visual “glamour” of bombing Iraq back into the past.

Back to the untenable comment by Charlie Black.  Black engaged his mouth before he engaged his brain.  And, as we all know sometimes the real truth comes out when we aren’t thinking.

“I deeply regret the comments, they were inappropriate,” Charlie Black said in a statement after McCain said that if Black had made such a comment, “I strenuously disagree” with it.

“I recognize that John McCain has devoted his entire adult life to protecting his country and placing its security before every other consideration,” said Black, one of McCain’s most trusted political advisers.

During the interview with Fortune Magazine, Charlie Black made the comment.

Fortune magazine said Black, in discussing how national security was McCain’s strong suit, had said when asked about another terrorist attack on U.S. soil that “certainly it would be a big advantage to him.”

Black has apologized for the comment although he claims that he doesn’t remember making it.  He did not deny that he made it.

Chances are that sooner or later our nation will come under attack again.  It would be unreasonable to assume otherwise.  But, to use that as a solidifier of the candidate is not a good reason to vote for John McCain.  We have many issues that are immediate… the economy, gas prices, soaring food prices, the national infrastructure, health care and the list goes on and on.  This is not to say that we should not be prepared and ever vigilant against attacks.  It is to say that there are other issues that are affecting each and everyone of us today.  We need a President who can handle our internal problems as well as a terrorist attack.  We don’t need a President who sits in the Oval Office waiting for an attack that may not come.
