John Edwards Bites the Dust
Well, I suppose he was too good to be true. Although I was a strong Edwards supporter while he was in the race, and perhaps because I was in his corner until he dropped out of the race, I am terribly disappointed in the latest Edwards’ news. Cheating on your spouse is equally despicable whether you are a Democrat or a Republican.
Perhaps, Edwards said it best when he said that he had (during his political career) begun to think of himself as special. Well, there’s nothing special about being unfaithful to a spouse. Apparently, his wife has known of this affair for almost two years.
Among those points of interest that Edwards still denies is that he fathered a child by his mistress. There have been tabloid rumors for months, even during his presidential race this year. Edwards’ excuse for denying the questions is less than flimsy. Stating that because ninety-nine percent of what had been written was false, he felt he could deny the allegations. That’s weak in the best of situations.
Now it seems that Edwards wants to clear his conscience and clear the decks. Still he denies that he fathered the child, saying that it was not possible since he had ended the affair before the conception of the child. I would like to take that on face value, but like most I will wait for the test results before I get in his corner.
All said and done, John Edwards has proved, like many who find themselves in the spotlight, that he is above reproach no matter the deed. And, like so many before him, I suppose John Edwards thought the secret would remain secret. Well, John, it seems that a secret is only a secret if only one person knows the secret. Unfortunately, the involvement of another woman, the confession to the wife, and snooping tabloid writers prohibited the secret affair from remaining secret. Expecting otherwise is nothing less than a display of stupidity and arrogance.
Another case of bad judgment by a man from whom we expected more. And, quite honestly, if the press had not started closing in on him, I doubt he would have confessed to the public who supported him.
