Back to the separation of church and state and God against the gays, again. Perhaps, this case is not all that interesting but there is just something about it that caught our interest. Here goes.
According to the Washington Post:
The Christian Legal Society at the University of California’s Hastings College of the Law in San Francisco several years ago began requiring its members to sign a statement of faith. The society says a person who “advocates or unrepentantly engages in sexual conduct outside of a marriage between a man and a woman” cannot become a member of the group and participate in setting its policies.
According to the Christian Legal Society at Hastings College of the Law (UC) in San Francisco, their mission is to
inspire, encourage, and equip lawyers and law students . . . to proclaim, love and serve Jesus Christ.
They sued. The 9th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals upheld the university’s position.
Okay, so there just has to be some irony in this case. First of all, San Francisco just doesn’t seem like the place to decide to discriminate against gay rights or any other rights. For all the times I have enjoyed in San Francisco, from Haight Ashbury to a few years ago, I just can’t see San Fran as a conservative venue.
So, let my personal memories be laid aside. Imagine the poor soul who is gay, arrested and can’t afford an attorney at some time in the future. Wouldn’t he just hate to get one of the Christian Legal Society’s former members appointed to his case?
The case will probably be heard in March. It should be an interesting statement of the Court’s position. After all, they have decided to hear the case.
