Who was Senator Evan Bayh listening to when he decided to leave the Senate?
Following Senator Evan Bayh’s announcement yesterday that he plans to retire from the Senate, most of us were knocked off our feet. In fact, we are still on our knees. He was one of our moderates, not that I always agreed with him, but he did seem to be one of our hopes for the future.
It is understandable how any man or woman would want to throw in the towel after seeing the mess Congress has made this past year. But, who would have guessed that Senator Bayh would be among them?
Perhaps more disheartening was his announced reason for leaving:
“Two weeks ago, the Senate voted down a bipartisan commission to deal with one of the greatest threats facing our nation: our exploding deficits and debt. The measure would have passed, but seven members who had endorsed the idea instead voted no for short-term political reasons,” Bayh said Monday.
“All of this and much more has led me to believe that there are better ways to serve my fellow citizens, my beloved state and our nation than continued service in Congress.”
Every man should do what is best for him and what he believes to be right. However, will all that said, it seems that those who are looking at close races aren’t willing to step into the starting gates.
Following Evan Bayh’s less than impressive speech at the Democratic National Convention, we all knew that he was lacking in speech-giving. But, we have Barack Obama for charisma. We need legislators that can support the Presiden’t policies. This year we have now seen three of our best known and previously most reliable Democratic Senators throw in the towel.
Well, if you don’t have the guts to stand and fight, we probably don’t need you anyway. However, after all the hard fought grass roots movement that put the Democrats in office and finally elected a President that we thought was a representative of the people, we are starting to feel a little scammed. Obama is sitting on the rail on most issues. And, his supporters in the Senate are fleeing as if someone yelled “fire!”
Could it be true that the Democrats are a party of lay down and play doormat liberals with no backbone and no spine? When is someone going to listen to the people and speak up for us?
This one is for all the “take your marbles and go home” Democrats who are afraid of a damned good fight. Don’t let the Capitol door hit you in the
on the way out!
