Bennett Amendment Passes with 100 Votes

by sinde on December 7, 2009

Could it be that the senators actually unanimously agreed on something?  Today they managed to vote 100 to 0 to protect Medicare.  Well, on the surface it looks as if there is some ground for agreement in the hallowed halls.

Yet, not more than fifteen minutes later the senators were back at it and voting on a similar bill.  It seems that Senator Bennett (D-Colorado) offered his amendment which stated that Medicare benefits would not be reduced for seniors and that money would not be taken from Medicare to support the new health care reform.  Who among us would disagree with that idea?  Apparently, no one.

Then, Senator Judd Gregg (R-NH) came back with a bill that sounded similar but had a few caveats that would have totally knocked health care reform into the worm hole.  The debate ranged and rambled for such a long time that most of us lost interest.  It was obvious that the Democrats were not going to go along with the extra kick that would have derailed all of health care reform.

Needless to say, the Nelson amendment did not pass.  Of particular interest was that the Republican speakers continually knocked AARP, the only lobby for senior citizens with any clout.

Oh, well.  Stay tuned.  To be sure the abortion vote will come tomorrow…. after all the old men put in their two cents worth.  Oh, my!  Even at my age I don’t want old men telling me what I can do with my body.
