FDA Nuts! Pistachios This Time

by sinde on March 31, 2009

Perhaps the FDA and some of the companies… Kraft, in particular… are getting the jump on a salmonella outbreak.  Could this be a lesson learned from the last nut salmonella outbreak, that killed several and sickened many?

Two million pounds of pistachios that have been distributed nationwide were recalled Monday, the Food and Drug Administration announced Monday night.

Concerns about bacteria-tainted pistachios surfaced when Kraft Foods tested them as part of routine analysis and “found a variety of different types of salmonella.”

The FDA has announced the recall in advance of any confirmed illnesses. There have been some consumer complaints, but that doesn’t mean definitively that the pistachios caused the illnesses.

The second largest pistachio producer in the country, Setton Farms, has been under investigation for the past several days.  The company packs thousands of pounds of pistachios and sends them to about a dozen wholesalers who then distribute the nuts.

At this time, the pistachios have been recalled across the country.  But, due to the wide distribution it is recommended that pistachios not be eaten until the situation is resolved.

While the recall is a pre-emptive act, it is a good sign.  In recent years the FDA has been faulted for slow action and being ineffective when it comes to protecting the American consumers.  Perhaps, Kraft was the instigation.  However, upon notification the FDA asked for a total recall.
