Oh, please! One of our favorite “F-Agencies” at work.
The FDA now has a list of some 125 products that are salmonella tainted as a result of peanuts. It is safe to say that the “peanut butter” scare has broken out of the institutions. Originally, the most recent salmonella outbreak was attributed to peanut butter that had been distributed to institutions such as hospitals, nursing homes and the like as well as restaurants.
Last week Little Debbie products that include peanut butter were added to the list. Today the list has grown to some 125 products including dog biscuits.
Within a week and a half, 125 brands of cookies, cakes, energy bars and even doggie treats have made the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s recall list.
Officials say store-bought jars of peanut butter are believed to be safe, but more investigation is needed into peanut-flavored products.
More than 70 companies have used peanut butter and peanut paste from the Peanut Corporation of America’s (PCA) processing plant in Blakely, Ga., which is believed to be the source of the salmonella outbreak in 43 states.
Among those 125 products, most are not institution bound.
Popular brands on the recall list include seven different kinds of PetSmart dog biscuits, Keebler Cheese & Peanut Butter Sandwich Crackers and NutriSystem Peanut Butter Granola bars.
That is not to say that all peanut butter products are sickening. Many companies use suppliers other than Peanut Corporation of America.
However, with the number of ill nearing 500 and the number of deaths at 6, it seems once again that the FDA is slow to react and track. Today we learned that the agency have people all across the country purchasing products for testing.
It seems that it would be more efficient to have someone on site where salmonella is most likely to begin… maybe test occasionally before the outbreak rather than scurry like rats across the country after the fact. But, what the hell! None of the “F-Agencies” are about prevention are they?
