January 8, 2010: Week in Review

by sinde on January 8, 2010

This has been a week of terrorist talk. The President came forward on Thursday to tell the American people that there was systemic failure that allowed The Christmas Day Terrorist to board Flight 253 in Amsterdam. According to the President the agencies responsible for our nation’s safety had collected all the dots but apparently had no idea about how to connect them.

President Obama assumed responsibility for the so-called systemic failure, but most of us know better.  All leaders love to say “the buck stops here.”  The truth is that the bureaucracy that has turned Washington and our government into the Titanic.  It is more than difficult to turn this ship of state at this point in time.  Each of the 16 agencies that are involved in national and homeland security is filled with egos that cannot bring themselves to share important information for fear that another department will receive credit for doing something right.

Health care reform has circled the news this week although there has been little said about the negotiations going on between the Senate and the House.  Of course, with the emphasis on terror this week it has been easy for those on Capitol Hill to stay out of the limelight.

We should be worried about the health care negotiations.  Insurance companies are fighting the proposed tax hike on high end policies.  As our attention has been diverted to more fearful thoughts, we must wonder how much access the lobbyists have had to the Hill.

The President turned his attention to jobs on Friday following the announcement that another 85,000 had been cut during December.  We are still looking at the lagging indicator and wondering when it is going to start catching up with the rebound that has been enjoyed by those on Wall Street.

With health care, the economy for those of us who live in the “rest of America,” and the War on Terror have taken the plate this week.  When we should have been paying attention across the board we were once again caught in the small slice that terrorists on airplanes play in our lives.  I’m not dismissing the terrorist or any plots against the nation.  I am only stating that the news this week has overwhelmingly been dominated by airline security.
