John Edwards Out of Limelight, Under Spotlight

by sinde on May 4, 2009

John Edwards, the disgraced man who ran for a while in the Democratic presidential primary race, has long since fallen from the limelight.  Today his is under scrutiny and the spotlight of an investigation.  As a previously ardent supporter of John Edwards and feeling betrayed by his early withdrawal from the race, not to mention the fake facade that he and his wife wore during his brief stint on the campaign trail, I would not be surprised if the investigation finds that some of his campaign funds were spent as hush money.

The Charlotte Observer reports that Raleigh-based U.S. Attorney George Holding is looking into whether any of former Sen. John Edwards’ campaign cash was used as hush money to keep his affair with Rielle Hunter out of public view.

In a statement to the paper, Edwards says: “I am confident that no funds from my campaign were used improperly. However, I know that it is the role of government to ensure that this is true. We have made available to the United States both the people and the information necessary to help them get the issue resolved efficiently and in a timely matter. We appreciate the diligence and professionalism of those involved and look forward to a conclusion.”

I guess Edwards feels that although he admittedly acted improperly, his campaign was above board on all counts.  Maybe there was a little dipping into campaign funds.  Maybe not.  After all, Edwards has sufficient personal money to pay off his squeeze.

Of course, with the cat out of the bag, there is no need to pay anything more… unless he gets wrangled into paying child support for Rielle Hunter’s child.  Edwards denies it is his… but… well, he has denied quite a bit that has come back to bite him.

While we all hope the very best for Elizabeth Edwards, John’s wife, we are left to wonder why she went along with his scheme to run for President.  Let’s face a little reality.  Both John Edwards and his wife are smart people.  They had to know that sooner or later someone would discover the truth… or the price to keep Hunter quiet would exceed their expectations.

I was truly disheartened by Edwards’ confession.  As an old dog I was sincerely hoping that there was real truth in Mr. Edwards’ portrait.
