Who would have guessed when former Senator Bob Dole began talking about “E.D.” he would have started an exclusive club comprised of Men Over the Hill On the Hill? This past week Senator Max Baucus admitted to having joined the club.
Okay, so here’s the thing about Senator Baucus. No one can really get too excited (no pun intended) about Senator Max Baucus having consensual sex with an aide. Doesn’t make it right, of course. But, Baucus has never been one of those senators… or men… who held himself out as a self-righteous evangelical with pristine family values. Oh, we aren’t knocking Baucus for not being in the mainstream of the holier than thou group. On many occasions Baucus has reminded us more of a Republican than a Democrat… but never one of those evangelical water walkers.
In fact, there is little one can say about the affair Baucus had with Melodee Hanes. Except for the fact that Baucus put her name in the hat for the job of U.S. Attorney in Montana, there is little interest in the whole affair. But, that is a real ethics issue, isn’t it?
There is no need to go through the laundry list of disgraced dignitaries. The novelty seems to have vanished. There is a need to raise the issue of ethics…. and perhaps remove the Viagra from the Captiol’s pharmacy.
UPDATE:
According to Max Baucus, he and Melodee Hanes did not have an “affair” and only began a relationship after both were separated. We will accept that because there is no information that disputes it at this time.
Baucus said that Hanes is highly qualified for the postion of U.S. Attorney for Montana. We will accept that. After all, she is working in the DOJ now.
So, for what it’s worth, we will stand by our initial thoughts. A notch in the belt, a big blue “V” on his tee-shirt, and a membership in The Men Over the Hill on the Hill Club for Max.
