Andrew Young’s new book, The Politician, is a revealing look at John Edwards and his meteoric rise and fall in the world of politics. But, perhaps it was the interview with Andrew Young on “Good Morning America” that gave us a real glimpse at the man who wrote the book.
George Stephanopoulos did a nice job interviewing Young, pressing him on some issues.
According to Young’s version of how he became involved in the Edwards’ affair, leading a reasonable person to a couple of disturbing conclusions. I am assuming myself to be reasonable.
Andrew Young, first and foremost, seems to have a vivid imagination that exceeds the normal bounds. Or, perhaps he is trying to sell the book. During the interview with Stephanopoulos Young disclosed that after the affair was exposed he often walked through his house at 3:00 a.m. carrying a baseball bat, insinuating that he was fearful for his life. Edwards may be a cheat and a fraud, but to believe that Young would fear for his life and pace the house in the middle of the night waiting for an assassin to appear is a bit melodramatic to my thinking.
Young also stated that his children slept in the bed with him and his wife for several months following the disclosure. Perhaps, Andrew thought having children in the bed with him would protect him. Who knows? It just all seems a little over the top.
Rielle Hunter lived with Mr. and Mrs. Young for several months during the pregnancy according to Young. I guess that brings me to the conclusion that the “over a million dollars” that was spent to keep Ms. Hunter away from the limelight went primarily to the Young’s for room and board. Doesn’t say much for Mrs. Young, does it? I can’t speak for anyone else, but on my worst day I can’t see myself agreeing to have my husband say he was the father of the child and have the “other woman” live in my house. And, what about the Young’s own children? What were they told?

Why Did Edwards and Young Continue the Charade?
Even for those who have no interest in the affairs of Andy and Johnny, Young made a wild statement on “Good Morning America” that apparently was for sensationalism, to sell books, or to hint that Young and Edwards knew something that no one else knew during the presidential campaign — besides the fact that Edwards was nailing his videographer.
Stephanopoulos asked why Edwards and Young were so willing to continue the campaign after the Edwards-Hunter affair had started slipping into the media. Young’s answer was interesting, but unsubstantiated.
Young said that even though Edwards had engaged in an affair with Rielle Hunter, both Edwards and Young seemed to believe that all the other candidates had bigger and more sensational skeletons in their closets. Stephanopoulos pressed Young to disclose some of those skeletons, but Young began to stammer and offered nothing more.
As I watched the interview I thought he looked as if he realized he had maybe gone a little too far. This is not to say that I believe everyone else is squeaky clean. I just believe based on the other parts of the interview that Young is out to sell his book and is willing to cross any line to make the NYT’s Best Seller List.
John Edwards is the biggest disappointment Progressives have seen in a long, long time. More than that, he is a disappointment as a man. At this time, as a former Edwards’ supporter, I can think of nothing kind or positive to say about the man.
However, Young has reached below the belt with his book. His paranoia could not be hidden during the interview — the talk of riding with Edwards, alone on a “lonely country road” and being in fear. Really?
The bottom line: Young wants to sell his book. For the discerning reader, Young paints a less than upstanding picture of himself, his wife and family. Edwards is a scum ball of the highest magnitude. Elizabeth Edwards isn’t the saint we have been led to believe her to be. Rielle Hunter is a hunter. And, I wouldn’t be surprised to hear that Andrew Young has been admitted to Dorothea Dix Hospital for paranoid schizophrenia at some time in the future.
And, Andrew Young of John Edwards’ infamy should apologize to former Mayor Andrew Young of Atlanta for sharing the name. I know the Edwards’ Young cannot help that he has the same name, but to disgrace the name as he has is an insult to anyone who may share the moniker.
