Nothing Good Comes from the Senate on Sunday: $1.1T Spending Bill

Americans should be aware that anything that happens after 5:00 p.m. on Friday and before 9:00 a.m. on Monday in Washington, DC or in New York cannot be good for the country, especially when talking spending.

Last fall those Friday night to Monday morning deals that bailed out the likes of AIG and Citigroup should have made us all cautious of things that happen during the weekends.  Kind of reminds us of things that go bump in the night.

Well, today the Senate really put the screws to Americans once again, passing a $1.1T — that’s TRILLION with a “T” — spending bill.  The House had filled their version with pork.  The Senate just stuffed it into the barrel.

There is a lot that can be said about the bill.  It will be signed.  That’s what really matters at this time.  There is no need to talk about all the extra earmarks — thousands and thousands — that made their ways into the bill.  Until Americans can find enough honest Senators and Representatives to stop the earmark spending we will continue to pour good money down the drain.

We have all heard the debate about spending, etc. that has been going on in the halls of Congress.  We have all seen those senators and representatives who love to stand before the cameras to talk about runaway spending.  We have all seen and heard them say that unless the health care reform doesn’t cost an extra penny they won’t vote for it.

We have heard them say that with “no inflation” this year there would be no cost of living increases for those receiving disability payments or Social Security benefits.  So, just why does the bill include a 2% increase in all federal employees salaries?  Odd isn’t it?  The old and the poor who probably need the increase more than anyone else in the country, the ones who have little or no control over their fixed incomes get 0% increase in their payments to meet their costs of living.

And, oh…. by the way:

The Citizens Against Government Waste said those projects included construction of a county farmer’s market in Kentucky, renovation of a historic theater in New York and restoration of a mill in Rhode Island.

Is it any wonder that Congress is losing support for anything it does?  The worst part of it all is that we saw the nation dive head first into debt under the Bush administration to fulfill his dream of ridding the world of Saddam Hussein and destroying Iraq in the process.  Now, with the Democrats in control of both the House and the Senate we see that they don’t have the balls to say “no” to earmarks.  In fact, it looks like a fight to see who can get the most cookies from the cookie jar — before the voters revolt.

So, if the keeper of the keys to the Capitol reads this, “Please lock the idiots out over the weekends in the future.”
