Are you unemployed or working a second job to make ends meet? Facing foreclosure? Applying for the SNAP (foodstamps) program for the first time? Well, obviously you are not a member of Congress!
It seems that Congress feels they need a pay raise. Apparently, the members have trouble living on the approximate $169,000 income they receive per year. Many of them earn additional income from outside speaking engagements and other sources. However, to keep Congress from feeling the pinch of having to earn extra income through speeches and appearances, the members are willing to trade their moonlighting hours for a 2.8% pay raise bringing the average income to $174,000 per year.
Congress can vote to reject the pay raise, and I am sure most of us believe they should. They haven’t done a very good job for us in the past few years, but like many CEO’s who have fleeced their shareholders after taking their corporations to the brink of bankruptcy Congressional members apparently are under the impression that they deserve more. It definitely will not be a merit raise. Perhaps a $4,700 pay raise will help them remember why they are in Washington.
When the bill was brought up to reject the pay raise it died in committee. Perhaps we should welcome the 111th Congress to Washington by flooding them with phone calls, faxes and emails demanding that they reject the pay raise. It’s not too late, but time is running out.
