Senator John Ensign is back in the headlines, not for anything new, but for the same old same old. When Ensign confessed his affair with his best friend’s wife he should have resigned. But, like many before him… Vitter and others in the Too Good to Be True Party… John Ensign is not willing to do the best thing for the State of Nevada or the United States of America. He should have resigned when the story broke. Maybe he could have gotten by if he had just been bedding some other friend. But, Ensign should have known that the door was not closed on the scandal. Those involved were too close politically.
Just when John Ensign probably thought the dust was settling, Doug Hampton surfaces with more allegations. Hampton alleges that Ensign continued the affair with his wife while tossing them a farewell party after firing them.
Doug Hampton, the husband of Nevada Republican Sen. John Ensign’s ex-mistress, alleges that the senator threw the couple a goodbye party after firing them both in early 2008, while Ensign’s affair with Cindy Hampton was still going on.
Okay, so if the allegations are true we can safely assume that both John Ensign and Cindy Hampton were involved. After all Cindy had to know she was still climbing between the sheets with the senator. Maybe the goodbye party was only intended for Doug. Not very thoughtful, but screwing around with your best friend’s wife doesn’t lend itself to the high end of morality either.
Hampton also asserts that a $96,000 payment made to the Hamptons in April 2008 by Ensign’s parents — wealthy casino owners — was actually a severance payment to Cindy Hampton, Ensign’s former campaign treasurer, rather than a gift, as Ensign’s lawyer claims. Ensign’s campaign committee and leadership PAC never reported any severance payment to Cindy Hampton.
Well, now… it’s starting to smell and not just like the aftermath of sex. Of course, we all know that Ensign will pass off this payment as an oversight or something equally inane.
No one other than the Ensigns and the Hamptons really give a happy damn about the affair. Sad to say, but flaunting power and position in front of some women will get the man anything he wants. I suppose it works the other way, too. The problem arises when the person is involved in politics or another profession that gives them access to government goods, services and taxpayer contributions.
It seems that Doug Hampton is out to destroy Ensign. Can’t say as I blame him.
Doug Hampton has portrayed the senator as reckless and out-of-control last year, apparently so smitten with Cindy Hampton that the Nevada Republican was willing to risk his political career — and destroy his relationship with Doug Hampton, a longtime friend and fellow evangelical Christian — over the relationship.
I’m not even going to comment on another “Christian” gone bad. It seems that the world is full of pious evangelicals who love to preach to us sinners about the taking the higher road to morality while crawling through the sewers themselves. But, that is another rant.
It is time for John Ensign to consider resigning over the holidays. We have national issues that need undivided attention… wars, health care, economy to name a few.
