Timothy Geithner Confirmation Vote Monday at 6:00

by sinde on January 22, 2009

Timothy Geithner, Secretary of the Treasury nominee, is expected to be confirmed by the Senate next Monday evening at approximately 6:00 p.m.  The vote on Geithner was announced by Harry Reid in the Senate this afternoon.

As we have learned, Geithner uses Turbo Tax to file his taxes, and he has “overlooked” some of his taxable income for several years.  Timmy G. has paid his taxes now, at least as far back as mandated by law.  Whatever his shortcomings it is the general consensus that Geithner is the man for the job.

Even those who have railed against him during the hearings seem to agree that Geithner is the man to lead the Treasury Department.  During the hearings, Geithner was one of the most polite witnesses or nominees the committees have met.  Even under close scrutiny he was attentive, looking the questioner in the eye and most often nodding in the affirmative.

Geithner gave away nothing of his or the administration’s plans.  Instead, he welcomed suggestions from everyone and continued to say that he looks forward to working with them.  If there was a bit of a hedge, it was when he was asked if he would follow in Paulson’s footsteps.  Obviously, to most observers the soon-to-be Secretary of the Treasury will not place his feet directly in Paulson’s give-away footsteps.

While it is also obvious that Geithner sees the need to keep the banks propped up, let’s hope that he won’t be so willing to reimburse banks for bad decisions… such as Bank of America who begged for and accepted $20 Billion last week so they could write off over $15 Billion this week.
